Treatment of Binge Eating Disorder & ADHD starts with a diagnosis.
What is Binge Eating Disorder? Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 1.5% in the general population. Prevalence of BED is however notably higher among patients with overweight or obesity. Binge eating disorder was first described in psychiatry in 1959, but officially recognized as a distinct eating disorder in 2013. The disorder is characterized by a compulsive feeling to overeat and a sense of losing control over eating. What is the link between ADHD and Obesity? The link between ADHD and obesity was first noticed in psychiatry in 2002 after observing a higher prevalence of ADHD among bariatric surgery patients, as well reports of less weight loss in the same patients after surgery. Compared to the general population, the risk of obesity among untreated adults with ADHD is 1.5x higher. Impairment is not limited to executive functioning of treatment plans- the easily distracted brain can finds itself turning to food to cope with distractibility symptoms. All patients are screened and if clinically applicable, interviewed further to assess for Binge Eating Disorder and ADHD.
